Bali is often referred to as the island of “holy water” because of the countless number of sacred springs on Bali and because holy water is the key element in their purification ceremonies. One of the five elements, water represents flow of energy (also known as prana or chi), connected to emotion and intuition. Balinese participate in water blessings regularly called “Melukat“, and believe that these rituals assist in cleansing our bodies on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
The tradition is a bathing ritual with such a holy water, in purpose to cleanse and heal any illnesses, physical or mental problems. More broadly, Water blessing ritual can also be done by ones who often have bad luck or such kinds. Another purpose of the ritual is to ask for God’s shelter so that one would not face any inconvenience in life.
The point is that the ritual of water blessing is addressed to the almighty God and or His manifestation. It can be done by any religion, depending on individuals’ beliefs. In Bali, for instance, and it is conducted due to the people willingness to cleanse themselves spiritually before worshipping the almighty God and asking for safety, health, etc.
